Resort Focus: Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort, St Lucia

The epitome of an island paradise, St Lucia’s breath-taking scenery and excellent weather make it a dream luxury vacation spot. Although continually voted as the ‘Best Honeymoon Destination’, St Lucia is also ideal for family vacations. No matter the occasion, Sugar Beach Resort and luxury residences offers the best accommodation on the island. We highlight the outstanding features of this stunning resort.

The location of Sugar Beach Resort is surely unsurpassed. The only resort in the world located in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sugar Beach is nestled between the two stunning Piton Mountains and sits on one of the best sandy beaches in the whole of the Caribbean. It seems to be the stuff that only the most extraordinary dreams are made of, yet it has become a reality which the luxury market can access.

Set within over 100 acres of rain-forest and beach, the resort is expansive and secluded, and this incredible location comes with a significant price tag, but you undoubtedly get above and beyond what you pay for, and the resort is beyond luxurious. We highlight the rooms, activities and services offered by this slice of paradise, from its four bedroom panoramic villas to its rainforest spa.

Sugar Beach is tailored for the luxury experience. Prices range from the luxury sugar mill room (around 855USD per night) which is 374 sq ft with one king bed, a large bathroom, a flat-screen TV, private garden and plunge pool with views of the gardens and palm lawn to the four bedroom residence, which offers incredible views of the ocean and Pitons have their own private infinity pools, fully equipped kitchens and enormous sun terraces. This villa will set you back around USD 4,255 per night. Our top pick are the luxury beachfront bungalows. These have doors that open directly onto Sugar Beach’s sands, with your own private patio area. The bungalow also has an outdoor Jacuzzi and private courtyard.

The resort provides an abundance of activities, most at no additional cost. The resort has a dive centre just feet away from the crystal waters of Anse des Pitons and the protected underwater park and National Marine Reserve that stretch along the base of the Petit Piton to the north and the Gros Piton to the south. There is a stunning array of marine life and there are routes both suitable for beginners and challenging for the advanced.

The following water-based activities are available free:

  • Windsurfing
  • Sailing
  • Kayaking
  • Hobie Cats
  • Pedalos
  • Snorkeling
  • Paddle Boards

There are also land-based activities. Guests can partake for free in:

  • Tennis
  • Pool
  • Beach Volleyball
  • Jogging & Walking
  • Table Tennis
  • Scheduled Fitness Classes

There are lessons available in most of the above and the resort also arranges a huge variety of interesting tours and excursions.  From hiking tours of the Pitons to canopy zipline adventures, from Soufriere market tours to deep sea fishing, there is something incredible for everyone.

The resort caters very well for younger guests offering the Sugar Club and the Spice Club which organise fun activities for two different age groups, such as sports and arts. A babysitting service is also available.

The Rainforest Spa

Before you think the beaches of St Lucia and your bespoke accommodation are the most relaxing places on earth, try a visit to Sugar Beach Resort’s Spa, nestled deep inside the island’s tropical rainforest.  The spa is rather unique, comprising seven traditionally built tree house treatment rooms, a wetroom with manicure and pedicure facilities, a relaxation pavilion, and an earthen Amerindian steam dome—known as a temascal. No chemicals are used at the spa; all treatments are based on traditional, natural therapies. Delightful packages are offered such as visits to nearby suphur baths at the island’s volcano and mud baths. Words cannot convey the sheer peace and tranquillity that can be found in this hidden gem of the rainforest.

Restaurants and Bars

St Lucian cuisine is for the most part a delightful mixture of Caribbean flavours and French cooking. Dining out is hugely popular and as a result there are many great restaurants on the island. Sugar Beach, a Viceroy Resort offers a selection of varied and sensational dining and drinking opportunities, from the refined fine-dining of the Great Room to the specialty rum cocktails of The Cane Bar.

The Bayside

The Bayside is the most relaxed and casual of the dining options at Sugar Beach, not requiring smart-casual attire unlike the Great Room and Cane Bar. The menu is international and offers simple a la carte lunches and dinners such as pizza, salads and wraps. There is also an excellent selection of fresh-fish dishes such as Teppanyaki Yellowfin Tuna, and Pan Seared Mahi Mahi and traditional Caribbean bites such as fried coconut shrimp and Heirloom Tomato & Pineapple Gazpacho. There is a vegetarian menu and children’s’ menu available. Dining on the beach is a wonderful experience and the view and food are both terrific.

The Great Room

The Great Room offers refined dining in a smart colonial-style setting, and delivers Caribbean-influenced delicacies in candlelit, air-conditioned surroundings. The menu is a reflection of what is in season and changes frequently according to what the freshest local ingredients are, though is comprised primarily of fish dishes, especially lobster, in traditional St Lucian style. The food is interesting and exciting and the atmosphere luxurious and sophisticated.

The Cane Bar

The Cane Bar is an ultra-chic contemporary bar which offers the finest rums available on the island. The dress-code is smart-casual and the bar has a sophisticated feel, helped by the stylish interior design with its smart sofas and eye-catching contemporary art. The bar provides a five-star service including a professional ‘rummelier’ to help customers select their perfect match among the plethora of expertly chosen native and international best-aged rums for which the island is famous. Accompanying the drinks are outstanding snacks, notably the delicious fresh-caught sashimi and sushi platters.
